Lighting Considerations

There are several lighting aspects that should be considered in selecting a light box for your environment including light intensity, color temperature and LED placement. Each factor affects the quality of light produced and how an illuminated panel or graphic will be perceived by a viewer. We offer different customization options to help you select the best design for your needs.

  • Light intensity or brightness is the total measure of light emission, taking into account the surface area of the light source. This is often expressed as lumens (lm). As the size of a light box changes, so will lumen measurement. LED lighting is particularly advantageous in that it uses less energy than fluorescent at equivalent intensity levels. We offer LED lighting for our light boxes in standard output (2200 to 2800 lm) and high output (4000 to 7000 lm) options.

  • The color temperature of light is measured using the Kelvin (K) scale and using it, one can determine what tonal quality the resulting light will have. Temperatures at the lower end of the scale are more red and appear warmer. Temperatures at the higher end of the scale are more blue with a cooler tone. Light in the middle, 5500K to 6500K, has a whiter cast and most simulates daylight. LED lighting stock options for our light boxes include 3200K warm white, 4200K neutral white, and 6500K daylight temperatures, all in standard output with 6500K also available in a high output option. Other color temperature options are also available.

  • For our LED light boxes, we offer two placement options, edgelit and backlit lighting. Our standard lighting option is edgelit LED placement where LEDs are installed along two sides of a light box with light evenly diffused by an etched acrylic panel. Edgelit lighting is available in standard output (2200 lumens) and high output (4000 to 6000 lumens) options. With backlit LED light boxes, LED strips are installed along the back of a light box with stronger light intensity. Backlit LED lighting standard output is 2800 lumens and high output measures a very bright 7000 lumens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a lightbox work?

A lightbox is built with an exterior frame and internal lighting source designed to illuminate a graphic from behind. With a fluorescent lightbox, a white acrylic diffuser sheet is placed over the lighting source, then the graphic, and finally the cover sheet. With our edgelit LED lightboxes, the graphic is placed directly on a built-in etched acrylic panel illuminated by LEDs, followed by the cover sheet. Lightboxes can have an edge lit or backlit lighting source.

All of our lightboxes are constructed with a lightweight yet durable aluminum chassis with 55% recycled metal content and over 90% are made in the USA.

What's the difference between Fluorescent and LED Lightboxes?

Fluorescent lightboxes use fluorescent tube lamps for the lighting source. We use primarily T5 and T8 bulbs and some T12 lamps in our fluorescent lightboxes. The number after the T refers to the bulb diameter; a T12 is 12/8" (1.5") in diameter, a T8 is smaller at 1" (8/8), and a T5 is even smaller at 5/8". T5 bulbs are more energy efficient than T8s, yet also more expensive at roughly double the cost. T12 lamps are the least energy efficient but are available in long lengths making them suitable for very large lightboxes.

LED lightboxes use light emitting diodes, a type of semiconductor, for the lighting source. We also carry LED strips that can be used to backlight new or retrofitted fluorescent lightboxes.

Fluorescent lightboxes are economical and can be made in very large sizes up to 36 feet in length. LED lightboxes are very energy efficient, lasting up to 100,000 hours, and can be made in ultra-slim sizes less than 1" thick. The maximum size for one of our LED lightboxes is 72"x 120".

The upfront cost for an LED lightbox is slightly higher but LED lighting uses significantly less energy than fluorescent lighting and the lifespan of the LEDs we use is much longer than fluorescent bulbs, anywhere from 5 to 10 times longer depending upon the type of bulb used. LED lightboxes are also available in thinner depths than fluorescent lightboxes.

What type of lightbox should I purchase?

There are many considerations when choosing a lightbox including the application, installation site, graphic size, and aesthetics. For example, if the lightbox will be used in a retail environment where bulb changeouts are not feasible, then we recommend an LED lightbox. However, if budget is a primary concern, then you may want to consider one of our fluorescent lightboxes. If you want or need an ultra-thin lightbox, then an LED lightbox is preferable to fluorescent. Very large graphics that are more than 10 feet long will require a fluorescent lightbox. As you can see, selecting the best lightbox depends on a variety of factors. We are happy to answer any questions you have to help you pick the right one

What's included with a lightbox order?

Fluorescent lightboxes include fluorescent bulbs, ballasts, white acrylic diffuser sheet, and clear cover sheet.

LED lightboxes include LED lighting, built-in etched acrylic panel, clear cover sheet, and power supply.

What type of graphics can be used with a lightbox?

Graphics printed on an backlit film 8ml substrate such as Kodak Universal Backlit Film are acceptable for use with our lightboxes. Graphics can also be printed directly onto an acrylic sheet, however, if you're considering this, we strongly recommend that you contact a local printer to assist you. Our frameless fabric lightboxes can use direct print or dye sublimation fabrics.

Do you print graphics?

We can, but typically recommend you contact a local print shop such as Fastsigns or Signarama to have graphics printed.

What's the warranty on DSA lightboxes?

The warranty on our domestically manufactured lightboxes is two years. Our imported lightboxes have a warranty of six months to one year depending upon the model selected.

Do you offer reseller or volume pricing? What about credit terms?

Yes, we do. For reseller pricing, you will need to provide a copy of your resale certificate. Please contact us directly if you are interested in volume pricing. We offer significant discounts on purchases of 6 or more lightboxes. If you would like credit terms, please contact us for a credit application.
